Extending the Season on the Ohio City Farm
Four new high tunnels added in fall of 2012 will help the Ohio City Farmers start seed early and continue to grow hardy plants into the winter months; a number of low tunnels to be added soon.
Tunnel Vision Hoops designs, fabricates and installs season extension structures in Northeast Ohio and beyond. In Ohio we have a solid 6 month growing season and high tunnels (a.k.a hoop houses or poly tunnels) allow farmers to extend the growing season by up to 4 months. The sun’s rays pass through the polyethylene layer bounce off the surfaces inside and become trapped within the tunnel warming the air inside, commonly known as the greenhouse effect. This keeps the tunnel significantly warmer compared to the outside temperature. Our tunnels have two layers of polyethylene plastic with Greenhouse Spacer Blocks in between to add an 8inch dead air space to further insulate the tunnels. These structures will help the Ohio City Farmers start seeds early and continue to grow hardy plants into the winter months.
